How to Add a Script Using Google Tag Manager (GTM)

Overview

Some third-party tools provide scripts that can be added to your site using Google Tag Manager (GTM).

GTM is managed directly by Google and maintained outside of MetriFi, but this article outlines when GTM can be used and points you to Google’s official documentation to get started.

What MetriFi Supports

  • Reviewing whether a third-party script or embed is compatible with your website
  • Advising whether a request should be submitted as a feature request
  • Helping determine next steps if a script cannot be added via GTM

Please note that MetriFi does not manage or configure Google Tag Manager containers on behalf of clients.

Using Google Tag Manager to Add Scripts

Often, the third-party vendor providing the script will also supply vendor-specific instructions for adding their script using Google Tag Manager. We recommend reviewing and following the vendor’s documentation first, especially if they outline specific tag types, triggers, or placement requirements.

If a third-party provider supplies a script that can be added via GTM, Google’s documentation will walk you through the most up-to-date steps. We recommend starting with the resources below:

Following Google’s documentation helps ensure your setup stays current as their platform evolves.

When a Feature Request Is Needed

If a third-party script cannot be added via GTM, or if the integration requires changes to site functionality, layout, or templates, the request should be submitted as a feature request.

You can learn more about how feature requests are reviewed here:

If you’re unsure which path applies to your request, feel free to reach out to our support team and we’re happy to help clarify.
